What is a change management craftsman?
 
He is someone who understands that change is all around us. His job is to minimise the impact of the myriad changes affecting his staff.
 
Change management is not a model, nor is it a process.
 
It ensures that all the people affected by the change understand why it is happening.
 
Not much more than that.
 
Common courtesy, in other words.
 
If that is all it is, why is it so difficult? Especially for men in the Autumn of their lives.

Loss of Craft

I suspect it is because they have lost the sense of craftsmanship they had in their early years.
 
That sense of doing something well for its own sake, the pride in a job well-done.
 
In the case of change management, what is the job to be done?
 
Some would argue that it is to follow due protocol and process, regardless the outcome. This is the bureaucratic approach.
 
Others would argue that it is to ensure that change occurs, any change. It matters not if the change is an improvement, the important thing is that the change occurs.
 
A change management craftsman steers a path between these two pillars. And a narrow path it is.
 
He seeks to follow due process with a little leeway to allow for individual initiative.
 
He seeks to implement change, the cost of which does not exceed the expected benefits.
 
Finally, he ensures that all his staff understand why the change is occurring and how it will affect them.
 
If he cannot do this last, change will not occur and he loses his claim to the title of craftsman.
